Social, Emotional, and Behavioral Skills
The Behavioral, Emotional, and Social Skills Inventory (BESSI) is a tool designed to assess social, emotional, and behavioral skills (SEB skills). It assesses five main skill domains, offering a broad overview of an individual’s abilities: Self-Management, Social Engagement, Cooperation, Emotional Resilience, and Innovation.
Within these five domains, the BESSI assesses 32 specific skill facets.
How does BESSI work?
The BESSI employs a skill inventory approach, where each item describes a particular behavior related to SEB skills. Individuals (or observers, if rating someone else) assess how effectively they perform these behaviors. These ratings are then averaged to provide scores across the five major skill domains and 32 specific facets.
How can you complete the BESSI?
You can access the BESSI online through the survey links. The full version, which takes around 20 minutes, offers feedback on 32 specific skills across the five main domains. Alternatively, the shortened BESSI-45 takes approximately 5 minutes and focuses solely on the five broad skill domains.
What versions of the BESSI are available?
Several versions of the BESSI are available, differing in detail, item count, and time required for completion. The BESSI can be administered either through self-report or observer-report formats, allowing individuals to evaluate themselves or others, such as students or coworkers. Links are available below.
